    Commas in thought listing data

    [edited from support email]

I have noticed a problem with the versions of medialab we're running on
the lab computers (all version 2006, though some are different release numbers). With thought listing items, when participants enter commas in their thoughts, this creates "extra" thoughts in the data file (using the CSV file). So, for example, one participant listed two "thoughts", but this used up six columns in the data file, which was followed by the correct number of '99' cells (ten). My data file, therefore, has an inconsistent number of columns from participant to participant.

I believe I figured the problem out. It appears to have been a "write as text" (or lack of this) problem in creating my medialab input files. Color me embarrassed.

Yes, the "write as text" option causes quotes to be used when saving text data--this helps programs to see, for example, a response with commas as a single variable.
