In a program like Microsoft Movie maker the audio and visuals are separate tracks. You can choose where they start and begin. Is that what you are asking?
You can stop and ongoing backsound by inserting a backsound on some other subsequent item. There is a silence.wav file I believe in the MediaLab Utilities folder. Try adding that (or something like it) as a backsound for the last item in your experiment.
