Can a subject skip an item when completing a questionnaire?

Depends on the item type. For scale responses, e.g., it's usually easiest to offer an extra response option that says "skip this item" -- it can be placed away from the other buttons by using adding top and/or left parameters after the button label--e.g., skip this item (t.8)
Note: to skip a series of items, you can use the skipto function (see user's guide) to specify an item that you want MediaLab to skip to in case a specific response is selected. Regarding this technique, see also: See also: http://www.empirisoft.com/support/showthread.php?t=25
